In the framework of increasingly multi-ethnic correctional settings, where language and cultural barriers faced by Foreign Nationals pose significant challenges to prison systems, penitentiary staff play a pivotal role to ensure human rights protection and fair treatment of prisoners, preventing episodes of radicalization and extremism.
The “Essential Prison Dictionary”, produced within the B-COMPETENT project, is designed to facilitate the communication between front-line prison staff and foreign inmates.
This document encompasses words and phrases commonly used by prisoners and staff in their daily interactions in different contexts: outdoor times, family visits, meals, training activities, health, etc.
Languages included in the dictionary are: English, Albanian, French, Greek, Montenegrin, Romanian, Spanish, Arabic.
